It takes the strategic depth of poker and wires it into a rogue-lite deck-builder, and the result has been hard for anyone who likes cards to ignore.

A Fresh Twist on Classic Poker

At its core, Balatro fuses poker strategy with rogue-lite mechanics: you build a deck over the course of each run, and no two runs play out the same way. The familiar poker hands are still there, but they come wrapped in a constantly shifting set of challenges, upgrades, and choices. The Jokers are the heart of it, little rule-benders that stack on top of each other until a modest pair is suddenly worth a mountain of chips.

It clearly landed. Within a few days of release it had passed 100,000 downloads and 5,000 reviews, holding an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam from poker regulars and newcomers alike. A few things explain the pull.

• Unique Gameplay Mechanics: The rogue-lite structure means every run is different. Success comes from building synergies between cards, especially the unique Joker cards that add a layer of strategy on top of the poker hands you already know.

What is a “rogue-lite”?

A rogue-lite is a gentler take on the rogue-like genre. It keeps the hallmarks, procedurally generated levels and a deliberately punishing, unpredictable challenge, but softens the permadeath that defines the harder rogue-likes. Instead of losing everything when you die, you usually carry some progress or upgrades into the next attempt. That changes the feel completely: each run builds on the last, so failure teaches you something instead of just sending you back to zero, and the difficulty stays engaging rather than discouraging.

And what is a “deckbuilder”?

A deckbuilder is a type of game where players start with a basic set of cards or resources and progressively acquire new cards as the game progresses. These new cards are added to the player’s deck, allowing them to customize and enhance their strategies over time. Deckbuilding games emphasize strategic planning, resource management, and adaptability, as players must decide which cards to add to their deck to best achieve their goals while responding to the dynamic challenges presented during the game

It diverges from traditional real-money play by not paying out winnings at all, and with a PEGI 3 rating it’s legal and suitable for all ages. The appeal is the gameplay, not a payout.

What makes Balatro work isn’t just the poker hooks, it’s how well it turns a game everyone already knows into something you have to relearn on every run. It rewards the same instincts good poker players lean on, reading the situation, weighing risk, and squeezing value out of a strong winning hand, then keeps changing the rules just enough to keep you honest. I went in skeptical of yet another poker spin-off and lost an evening to it without noticing, which is about the highest compliment I can pay a game.
