In the small, rural town of Pilot Grove, north of Dallas, Benny Binion’s story began. Benny’s criminal history traces back to 1924. He was convicted twice for moonshining during Prohibition, and in 1931 he was convicted again, this time for shooting a rum-runner named Frank Bolding. By the end of 1936, Benny’s private dice games in Dallas hotels, run under the name Southland Syndicate, controlled most of the gambling operations in the city. That run came to an end in 1946, when his political protection in Dallas dried up and he was forced to flee to Las Vegas.
Conquering Las Vegas: The Casino Years
Benny first partnered with the Las Vegas Club casino for a year before opening the Westerner Gambling House and Saloon on his own. In 1951, he acquired the Eldorado Club and the Apache Hotel, combining them into what would become Binion’s Horseshoe. Innovations that are now casino standards, carpeted floors, free drinks for players at the table, and limousine pickups for high rollers, all trace back to him. His philosophy was simple: “Good food, good whiskey cheap, and a good gamble.”
The Poker Legacy
While Benny organized poker games, he wasn’t one to frequently sit at the table himself. His contributions to the game were nonetheless substantial. He arranged the famous head-to-head poker game between Johnny Moss and Nick “The Greek” Dandolos in 1949, and in 1970 he created the World Series of Poker, an event that grew out of that original idea. He was posthumously inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1990.
Family Ties and the Horseshoe Legacy
Benny’s sons, Jack and Ted, took over the Horseshoe in 1964 and ran it together for years. His wife, the formidable Teddy Jane, managed the casino cage until 1994, and his daughter Becky later took over the presidency of the Horseshoe in 1998, keeping the business in family hands for three generations.
Benny’s Lasting Legacy
Benny’s influence wasn’t limited to poker. He played a key role in moving the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) to Las Vegas, and owned a horse, later known as “Benny Binion’s Gelding,” who was a three-time National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) World Champion.
Benny’s Final Years
Benny Binion died of heart failure on December 25, 1989, at the age of 85, closing out a life that took him from the back roads of Texas to the top of the Las Vegas casino world. He’s remembered, fittingly, as either “the gentlest bad guy or the baddest good guy you’d ever seen.”
