Edmond Hoyle never played a hand of poker in his life. He died in 1769, decades before anything resembling the modern game existed. He wasn’t even primarily a games player himself: by trade he was a lawyer who taught wealthy Londoners to play Whist, and wrote his rules down at their request. And yet his name still gets invoked at poker tables today, which says something about how much of what we consider the rules of card games traces back to one 18th-century Londoner.
