Early Position	The first player(s) to act in a poker hand. In a nine-handed game, the first three players to the left of the blinds would be considered to be in early position. Also can be referred to as Under The Gun (UTG), UTG+1, UTG+2, etc, depending on the number of players at the poker table.
Effective Stack	In a confrontation between two players, the smaller of their two stacks. It caps how much either player can win from the other, since you can only win what you or they have behind. In multi-way pots, there can be a different effective stack for each pair of players.
Eight or Better	A common condition to meet in hi-lo games. To qualify for the low hand, a player must have five unpaired cards, none higher than an 8. Aces count as a low card in the variations that use this rule.
Equity	Your share of the pot’s expected value based on your probability of winning the hand at any given moment. A hand with 60% equity against a single opponent claims 60% of the pot in long-run expectation.
Expected Value (EV)	The average result of a decision if it were made an infinite number of times, calculated by weighing each possible outcome by its probability. A decision with positive EV is profitable on average over the long run; one with negative EV loses money on average, even if it wins in any single instance.
Exposed Card	A card that has been revealed, accidentally or intentionally, during play.
Face Card	A Jack, Queen, or King, so named for the face image printed on the card rather than numerical pips.
Family Pot	A hand where all or nearly all players at the table call before the flop. Common at low-stakes and friendly home games.
Fast	Playing aggressively, favoring bets and raises over checks and calls. Often used to describe a style such as: ‘he plays fast’.
Feeder	A secondary cash-game table that feeds players into a main table with the same stakes and structure. When a seat opens at the main table, a player is moved over from the feeder to fill it. Also called a ‘must-move’ table.
Feeler Bet	A small, leading bet usually made after the flop in an attempt to gather information from how others respond. Also called a Probe Bet.
Felt	The cloth covering of a poker table, often green. Metaphorically, the table itself.
Field	The full group of players entered in a tournament.
Fifth Street	The fifth and final community card in Hold’em and Omaha, also called the River. In Seven-Card Stud, it refers to the fifth card dealt to each individual player.
Fill	To complete a drawing hand by catching the card you needed. To Fill Up typically refers to completing a full house.
Final Table	The last table in a multi-table tournament, reached when the field has been reduced to a single table.
First Position	The first seat to act in a betting round: directly to the left of the big blind pre-flop and directly to the left of the dealer post-flop. The pre-flop First position player is also called Under the Gun.
Fish	An inexperienced or weak player whose mistakes create profit for better players. Also used as a verb: to fish is to chase a weak hand hoping to get lucky.
Fishhooks	Slang term for Pocket Jacks. Named due to the shape of the J’s.
Five-card Draw	A classic poker format where each player is dealt five private cards, then has the option to discard and draw replacements. There are no community cards. What you’re dealt and what you draw is all you have. There is a round of betting after the initial deal and again after the draw.
Five-card Stud	A classic poker game in which players are dealt five cards, with the first card face down and the remaining four cards face up, and must make the best five-card hand using the cards they are dealt. There is a round of betting after the first 2 cards a dealt, then a round of betting after each additional card.
Fixed Limit	A betting format where all bets and raises, both the quantity and size, are fixed. There’s no flexibility in sizing, you either bet the set amount or you don’t bet at all.
Flash Satellites	A GGPoker-exclusive set of proprietary direct-entry satellite tournaments. The set includes Roshambo, Avatar Race, Flip & Go and All-In or Fold Sit & Go. You can find these satellites in the poker client on the tournament lobby pages.
Flat Call	Calling in a spot where raising was a live, reasonable option. See also: Smooth Call.
Flip & Go	A GGPoker-exclusive, two-stage tournament format. In the Flip Stage, every player is dealt three cards, discards one, and is forced all-in each hand until only one player remains at the table. Surviving players then move on to the Go Stage and are in the money. The Go Stage is a standard No-Limit Hold’em tournament.
Float	Calling a bet on one street with no intention of winning based on current hand strength. You’re planning to take the pot away on a later street when your opponent shows weakness.
Floorman	A casino employee responsible for overseeing the poker room. The floorman handles player disputes, makes ruling calls on unclear or unusual situations, manages table assignments, and enforces the rules. Their decision is typically final at the table level; escalation to a poker room manager is possible but uncommon. When any rule question arises that players cannot resolve themselves, calling the floor is the standard protocol.
Flop	The first three community cards, dealt face-up simultaneously. Along with the turn and river, the flop defines the board in Hold’em and Omaha.
Flop a Set	When holding a pair, having the flop come down with a third card to match your pair, giving you a three-of-a-kind.
Flop Game	Any variety of poker which contains community cards. Most notably Texas Hold’em and Omaha.
Flush	Any five cards of the same suit. Rank does not matter. In most poker variants, a flush beats a straight but loses to a full house.
Flush Draw	Having four cards of the same suit, needing one more to complete a flush. A weaker version with only three suited cards, needing two more, is called a backdoor flush draw.
Fold	To discard your hand and give up any claim to the pot. Once you fold, you’re out of the hand.
Fold Equity	The extra value you get from a bet because there’s a chance your opponent folds. Even a weak hand can profit if it makes the other player give up often enough.
Forced Bet	A mandatory bet that players must make to play in a poker hand, usually in the form of blinds or antes.
Four Flush	Another term for a flush draw. In some non-standard poker variants, a four flush is ranked as its own complete hand rather than a drawing hand.
Four of a Kind	Four cards of the same rank. It is the third-strongest possible hand, beaten only by a straight flush and a Royal Flush. Also called quads.
Four-Color Deck	A non-standard deck that contains four colors instead of two, which makes it easier to differentiate between the suits, at a glance. Commonly used for online play, and typically contains the standard black spades and red hearts, along with green clubs and blue diamonds.
Four-Straight	Four sequentially ranked cards needing one more to complete a straight. If it can be completed at either end, it’s an Open-Ended Straight Draw. If only one specific rank in the middle completes it, it’s a Gutshot. See also: Open-Ended Straight Draw, Gutshot, Double Belly Buster.
Fourth Street	The fourth community card in Hold’em and Omaha, dealt after the flop and followed by a betting round. Also called the Turn. In Seven-Card Stud, it’s the fourth card dealt to each individual player.
Free Card	A community card seen without having to call a bet because every player checked that street.
Freeroll	1) A poker tournament with no buy-in. 2) When two players are drawing to the same hand, but one also has extra ways to win.
Freeze-Out	A tournament format where players are eliminated when they lose all their chips. There are no rebuy, re-entry, or add-on options in freezeout tournaments.
Full Barn	See Full House. Less common slang than Full Boat, but the same hand.
Full Boat	See Full House. The most commonly used slang term for a Full House.
Full House	Three cards of one rank paired with two cards of another. Ranks above a flush and below four of a kind. Also called a Boat, Full Boat, Full Barn, or Tight.
Full Ring	A table with a full complement of players, typically nine or ten in Hold’em.
